At Hast, we have chosen to make the semi-cutaway collar our signature collar. Elegant and universal, it appears on many shirts and perfectly embodies our aesthetic choices. A mix of traditional simplicity and a more modern touch, this versatile collar adapts to all environments and has established itself in recent years as an essential piece of the men's wardrobe. How, however, can you definitely recognize a semi-cutaway collar? How to differentiate it from a French or English collar ? How do you make sure it’s what it should be? Discover below our vision of the semi-cutaway collar, as well as our advice for choosing it and wearing it well.
How to recognize a semi cutaway collar
As its name suggests, the semi-cutaway collar is a hybrid collar, located halfway between two types of collars: the French collar and the Italian collar, or cutaway. Note in passing that the names of these different passes can vary greatly depending on the environment or country.
• The French collar: This is the classic collar par excellence; it has a narrow collar opening, and its points point downward. This is the traditional collar that we find, or used to find, on the majority of shirts. Elegant and easy to wear, it has a slight tendency to elongate the face, and is easier to wear with a relatively thin tie, especially if it is small.
• The cutaway collar: Also called a spread collar or Italian collar, this collar is the exact opposite of the French collar. With its wide opening, it highlights the tie and tends to moderately widen the face. Popularized by the English in the 18th century, this collar has also established itself as a timeless classic.
• The semi cutaway collar: As you might have guessed, the semi cutaway offers an interesting alternative to these two types of collars. With its medium opening, it is the most versatile — it adapts to all face types. This is why it is more and more popular today, and why we chose it as our signature collar.
