Every time you watch a James Bond movie, you ask yourself the same question: how, with so much action and adventure, does James manage to keep his shirt collars in perfect condition, while after three wears, your collars develop a kind of squint and rebel?
Perhaps you have never heard of collar stays, those little rods slipped into the collar of the shirt? No problem, here we reveal the secret to a perfect collar.
But why do we talk about collar "whales"?
The origin of the word comes from corset makers who, from the 16th century, used real whalebone as rods slipped into their corsets. With a flexible rigidity, this material allowed to hold while presenting a certain resistance to different tensions. From the 19th century, steel rods began to be used, more economical, but the term whalebones remained.
Is it really useful?
Collar stays, although hidden, are essential in a formal shirt because they keep the collar points straight, preventing them from turning up, which is visually unsightly (and not very "James Bondesque " ). Be aware, however, that not all shirt collars require collar stays, this is the case for button-down collars , mandarin collars or officer collars . So don't be surprised if for these models you can't find the famous little removable rods.
There are two types of collar stays: built-in stays and removable stays, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
Integrated whales
Ideal for those who don't want to bother. These are directly integrated into the collar of the shirt and you don't have to worry about them, you can pretend they're not there. You don't have to remove them when you put your shirt in the washing machine and they perform their function of holding the tips of the shirt collar.
In order to avoid breakage, they are generally very flexible and therefore do not hold the collar as well. The other disadvantage is that they risk becoming deformed more easily with successive washes.
Removable whales
This is the type of whalebone preferred by connoisseurs. You can remove and replace the whalebones from your shirt collars as you wish, by sliding them into the small slots provided for this purpose. Of course, you have to remove them before each wash and put them back once the shirt has been washed and ironed.
However, it doesn't require a lot of effort and will ensure good durability for your collar stays. And if, after a stunt worthy of the greatest, one of the stays still breaks or becomes deformed, you can change it, without your shirt having to suffer, thereby extending its lifespan.
At Hast, all our formal shirts are fitted with removable stays, which will ensure that your collar holds its points well.
Bonus: mother-of-pearl whales
If the collar stays that we systematically slip into Hast shirts are effective, there is something even more sophisticated: the removable mother-of-pearl stays. These very elegant accessories will give your collar points a superb rigidity and a little luxury that only you will know about... a bit like a secret weapon - and that is very classy.
So remember, for those of you (and I'm sure there are some) who have ever thrown away the little white plastic rods you find in the collar of Hast shirts thinking that they were, like pins, elements used for packaging or presenting the shirt, next time, think twice, we have placed them for you!
