Le coton ciré, une armure à l’épreuve du temps

Waxed cotton, a timeless armor

Since 2012, Hast has made it a point of honor to develop exceptional clothing designed for everyday life . Around the art of blouse-making, the cornerstone of a wardrobe where high standards and timelessness reign supreme, we responsibly design precious, top-quality pieces.

Alongside the launch of our Spring-Summer 2025 collection, two extraordinary pieces majestically embody this ambition: our jacket and our coat in Wax fabric.

Chronicle of an XXL challenge

At the heart of our commitments, honesty guides the smallest of our projects and shines through in each of our movements. From the choice of natural or recycled fibers to our communication, including the selection of the finest European know-how, we aspire to produce as fairly as possible, while respecting people and the environment.

Therefore, we aimed to develop rainproof clothing, capable of keeping you dry from the March showers to the last mid-season downpours. Respecting our values, it was inconceivable to resort to polluting synthetic materials, a constraint of principle that pushed us to redouble our inventiveness.

While it is easy to protect yourself from the elements using plastic derivatives, it is indeed more difficult to do so using natural raw materials. By definition, the latter are alive, breathe and interact with their environment, including liquids. This is where Halley Stevensons comes into play.

Waxed cotton, exceptional know-how

The waxed cotton used to make our jackets and coats is a skill that Halley Stevensons has been enhancing for over 160 years.

A jute mill founded in Scotland in 1864, the pearl of Dundee quickly distinguished itself by developing waterproof, breathable and durable fabrics. In particular, it was the waxed cotton - the famous waxed cotton - that brought it worldwide fame.

To develop it, Halley Stevensons carefully selects extremely dense Aegean cotton canvases before carrying out the entire dyeing and finishing process in-house. Singeing to eradicate short fibres, baths dedicated to removing the starch used in the weaving process, dyeing, sanforising, emery, waterproofing process by passing through a biodegradable hot wax bath, drying: Halley Stevensons carries out all these operations in-house, capitalising on a century of expertise, an exceptional fleet of machines and a great sense of innovation.

“Our team has a background in chemistry and design, so our waxed cotton is really a process where science meets art,” Dorothy Arnott, sales and marketing director at Halley Stevensons, explained in an interview with Toast magazine in January 2025 .

In addition to the impressive know-how of the House, it is the level of commitment of Halley Stevensons that seduced us. Not only does the factory work with natural fabrics in pure cotton, but it also claims to take action in favor of a sustainable and environmentally friendly production method. Selection of premium organic fibers, limitation of chemical products, water savings, use of by-products from local industries to avoid waste: the House is part of an eco-responsible approach that did not fail to resonate with ours.

Combining water resistance, breathability, durability and responsibility, Halley Stevensons' Wax fabrics have been a renowned signature for over a century , which is why we have chosen these master canvases.

Our waxed cotton jackets and coats

Enough of the suspense, let's go without further delay to discover these two new products with their emblematic fabric.

To kick things off, let's take a look at this Halley Stevensons waxed cotton waterproof coat.

Available in olive green and ecru, its line recalls our reversible mac from last season. With its raglan armhole, buttoned tightening tabs at the bottom of the sleeve, generous stand-up collar and center back slit, it evokes a quiet elegance, imbued with suppleness and fluidity.

Made from pure waterproof waxed cotton, it will protect you from the elements like any raincoat worthy of the name, and without a single gram of plastic. In a textile industry dominated by polyester, this is rare enough to be highlighted, especially on the back of a technical garment.

With a density of 230 gr/ m² and without any lining, it will keep you dry throughout the off-season without making you too hot. In addition, the density of its weave also acts as a windbreaker, a significant detail to protect you against gusts of wind. Inside the right panel, you will find a removable insert that you can button at the collar to keep it raised and sealed against drafts. A real bulwark against the elements.

If you prefer jackets to coats, we've got you covered. Cut from the exact same Halley Stevensons waxed cotton canvas, our waxed fabric jacket comes in a shorter, more workwear-oriented version.

Available in green and ecru, it features a contrasting corduroy collar, a double-slider zipper and a pair of patch pockets with flaps to combine tradition and modernity.

Like its counterpart, it has a nice straight cut but, for its part, hardly ventures below the posterior.

For their part, the adjusters on the cuffs and the button placket at the collar will allow you to protect yourself from the attacks of Mother Nature, while its raglan sleeves will promote total freedom of movement.

Last point: you will discover inside this jacket a magnificent gingham lining in pure cotton , just to keep you warm with lots and lots of style.

Face the vagaries of time, for a long time

Waterproof, iconic and tireless, our Halley Stevensons waxed fabric coats and jackets are a promise of durability.

Crafted in pure waxed cotton, they will acquire an intimate and personal patina over time, bearing witness to your every move. Timeless and functional, they will accompany you everywhere and for a long time, from the new dawn to the twilight of the inter-season.
