In just a few years of existence, Hast has become the gold standard for formal shirts. By choosing to limit our intermediaries as much as possible, to work with hand-picked workshops and to specialize in shirts (even if we also offer suit jackets, pants, sweaters, etc.), we managed to obtain a report unparalleled quality/price. Our simple and elegant models, available in subtle variations, offer our customers a wide choice of shirts suitable for everyday life as well as exceptional occasions. Discover our men's formal shirt here, in its minimalist version as well as in its more original incarnations.
How to recognize a formal shirt?
Clichés and commonplaces abound when it comes to choosing a formal shirt. For many, it is necessarily a white poplin shirt, topped with a classic French collar. However, the men's formal shirt knows many expressions, and tolerates more freedoms than one might think.
The distinctive signs of a formal shirt
• The cut: The first element to distinguish a formal shirt is of course the cut. We generally favor fitted or even fitted cuts. The goal is not only to be able to hold the shirt in the pants, but also to flatter the silhouette and highlight the tie and jacket. Conversely, a more casual shirt will often be slightly shorter, to be worn outside of the pants, and considerably looser. • The finishes: Unless you are invited to a particularly formal ceremony or dinner, it is not necessary to have French cuffs, a wing collar and a hidden buttonhole to obtain a formal outfit. However, formal shirts are most often recognizable by their absence of pockets, visible pleats in the back and visible buttons on the collar.
• Patterns and colors: Contrary to popular belief, a formal shirt can perfectly have patterns. However, these will usually be thinner and less contrasting than on other types of shirts. We will rather favor classic patterns such as stripes or checks, avoiding assembling too many colors to avoid the “lumberjack shirt” effect. The same goes for colors: these are tolerated on a formal shirt, but we should be careful not to use too bright shades.
The different types of formal shirts
Depending on the type of company you want to go to, the level of formality will not always be the same. This is why, at Hast, we offer you numerous options in order to bring together all the characteristics of an outfit perfectly suited to the occasion.
Our very formal shirts
In reality, most formal shirts today can be worn in a more casual setting, at the office or on the weekend. There is only one shirt that only lends itself to a very particular dress code: the fitted white poplin shirt with a wing collar. This is the tuxedo shirt, which only goes with a bow tie (thanks to its hidden throat) and requires cufflinks (with its French cuffs).
Our must-have formal shirts
If you want a formal shirt that is very easy to wear and combine with all your outfits, head for the timeless classics of the genre: the semi-cutaway collar shirt in white or blue poplin. A basic of basics that you absolutely must have in your wardrobe.
Original formal shirts
Tired of always wearing the same white poplin shirt? Don't hesitate to try other weaves with subtle patterns like oxford, twill, dobby, pinpoint or chevron. As suggested above, vary the colors or patterns, and try original collars, such as the club collar, which has recently returned to fashion, or the officer collar, to be worn without a tie.
